A few things that apply to every visit
Please wear a top that’s easy to remove and any bottoms you’re comfortable wearing for your scan. You’ll undress from the top down and change into a comfortable robe.
Nothing. Just yourself.
We have everything we need from your online intake, so there’s no need to bring your ID, insurance card, paperwork, or payment method. The payment method on file will be charged after your appointment, so there’s nothing to worry about on the day of your visit.
Within 24–48 weekday hours, you'll receive an email directing you to your results in your secure patient portal. If any follow-up imaging or appointments are recommended, we'll reach out to you directly during that same timeframe.
What happens during my appointment?
- This is the standard BeSound appointment.
- The appointment takes about 30 minutes from start to finish.
- After you check in, a member of the all-female sonographer team will bring you back to the private screening room. She'll provide a comfortable robe for you to change into, then have you lie back to begin your scan.
- The sonographer will apply lotion and use a handheld transducer that gently glides across your breast tissue in systematic sweeps. You'll feel light pressure as the transducer moves, but nothing painful. The lotion may feel cold at first but will warm up as the transducer moves.
- The scan itself takes about 15 to 20 minutes for both breasts. The sonographer will explain what she's doing and answer any questions you may have throughout.
This scan is only performed when ordered by the interpreting physician as a follow-up to your screening, when additional evaluation of a specific area is recommended. Depending on your situation and our schedule, it may be performed the same day as your screening or scheduled for a separate visit. Your care team will let you know which applies to you.
What it is. Opto-acoustic (OA) imaging combines traditional ultrasound with specialized laser light. The laser pulses gently warm the tissue, which creates a sound wave that the ultrasound transducer picks up. Together, these signals give the interpreting physician more detailed information about the area being evaluated than ultrasound alone can provide. This is a diagnostic scan.
A few things to know before you come in
- Plan for 20–30 minutes for the scan itself.
- Because the system uses a specialized laser, your sonographer will give you a pair of protective glasses to wear throughout the scan. She'll also be wearing a pair. This is a standard safety precaution.
- Please remove any piercings on the breast before the scan.
- The scan itself feels similar to a standard ultrasound. The sonographer will apply warm gel and gently glide a handheld probe across the area being imaged. You may feel very mild warmth from the laser pulses, but nothing painful.
- As with your screening, you'll receive your results within 24–48 weekday hours through your secure patient portal.
